Figure Drawing #1

I started going to figure drawing workshops, offered by Pratt's Arts Department, to loosen up my drawing process. Normally, when I draw, I have to have control of everything and process what I'm doing before I put my pen down. I've realized that drawings look better by letting go of that control and focusing on drawing what you see,  the feeling evoked by the object, or the overall gesture of the model. You can see this in some of the drawings below, where the model looks static even though he is in a very dynamic position. The drawings range in sketching times, from one to five minutes long. The last four sketches are five minutes long. I believe I improved compared to the initial quick sketches.

I used to do more detailed figure drawings several years ago when I was in Florence studying Italian and design. These sessions lasted much longer, from twenty minutes to an hour, so they are more detailed. I chose the best of these and put them on my portfolio.
